Important update regarding three new border control procedures that will impact travelers entering Europe in 2025 and beyond. These changes include:
- Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for the U.K. – ETA started with trials in October 2023 and will be expanded as of April 2, 2025 to include travelers from most European countries, the U.S., Australia, Japan, and others. Those travelers will need to obtain an ETA before traveling to the U.K. This digital authorization costs £10 and is valid for two years and allows multiple short-term visits. Nationalities that are on the exclusion list, need to check if a visa is required instead.
- European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) – Expected to be introduced in late 2025 or early 2026, ETIAS will require non-EU nationals who currently travel visa-free to the Schengen Area to apply for authorization before their trip. There will be a transition period of at least six months where travelers will not be refused entry if they do not yet have an ETIAS.
- Entry/Exit System (EES) – Originally planned for 2023 but delayed, the EES is now expected to launch November 10, 2025. This system will replace passport stamps with an automated registration process for non-EU travelers entering and exiting the Schengen Area. The EES must be operational before ETIAS can be implemented.
To help you navigate these changes, BCD Travel has created an exclusive report detailing when these procedures will take effect, when to use them, and how travelers can apply.
